Who We Are

DJ Macleod

My name is

Donald John MacLeod (DJ)

I am the proud owner of VATISKER.TOURS. I’ll be your guide on this tour, and my aim is to give you a wonderful and memorable experience on the beautiful Hebridean island of Lewis.

A quick bio… after graduating in Electronics Engineering, I had a long career in software development and project management before deciding to return to the island of my birth and try something new

So, I followed in my father’s footsteps and decided to become a Harris Tweed® weaver in 2020. I also worked part-time as a visitor assistant at Museum Nan Eilean. It is here where the first imaginings of starting a tour venture began to emerge, primarily as a result of the many interactions I had with visitors from all four corners of the world. It is where I understood what was of interest that they had seen on the island but, more importantly, what they would like to see!! Out of this I formulated a blend that honed my own skillsets in weaving, museum experience and local knowledge to produce the SENSE, EXPLORE, CONNECT experience here.

We are a new entrant to the Hebridean tours scene and are truly excited to deliver a fresh, vibrant, interactive experience where your senses are exposed to 3 sides of island life. There are many wonderful locations on the Isle of Lewis, and well worth a visit in their own right. This tour, however, has been designed to engage in more than sightseeing and is one I’m sure you’ll find both enjoyable and memorable.

Lewis Chessmen, Isle of Lewis

the sights, sounds, smell and feel of the iconic Harris Tweed®.

The first stop on the tour is my loom shed in the village of Vatisker. With the loom, I demonstrate the process of transforming simple woollen threads to the final woven Harris Tweed®.

my favourite beach on the island, Garry Beach. As we make our approach over the hill the glorious expanse of sand comes into view, impressively framed by the soft peaty hills and finished by majestic sea stacs rising like giant’s teeth. Let’s go walking and take it all in…

with Hebridean life, history and culture

Our final stop is Museum nan Eilean located at Lews Castle in Stornoway where we connect with the rich heritage and culture of the Outer Hebrides.

  • We will communicate in the booking confirmation but will be either the Stornoway Deepwater Port or Stornoway ferry terminal.
  • The Hebrides can include four seasons in one day so it’s best to be prepared with a light waterproof coat. Two of our experiences are indoors but Garry beach obviously could be wild and wet… don’t worry, there are umbrellas stored on the minibus.
  • I am always available at info@vatisker.tours which is regularly monitored or by calling +44 (0)1851 619123 which gets diverted to my mobile phone when I’m out and about.

People with health conditions or impairments must make a personal judgement but we would not recommend anyone with mobility issues undertaking the EXPLORE section of the tour at Garry Beach. The terrain is undulating with rocks and sand and we will be walking for about 30 mins.

We look to accommodate 12 guests with 14 being the absolute maximum.

  • We require a minimum of 4 people on each tour. If this is not reached 48 hrs before the tour is due to start we will unfortunately have to cancel and you will receive an email confirmation with full refund.
  • The guide and minibus driver will be at the departure point 15 mins before the tour is due to start. If you are not there at the advertised start time we cannot wait more than a few mins and if you do miss the tour you will unfortunately get charged the full booking fee.
  • On request we can stop at Traigh Mhor toilet facilities which are very close to our scheduled 11:40 am stop at Garry beach. There are extensive toilet facilities at the Museum which is our last scheduled stop at 1:00 pm.
  • I can certainly consider this so please get in touch and we can discuss.
